GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. –
Eimer Lopez' three-pointer with eight seconds remaining gave Colorado Mesa a 69-67 win over the MSU Denver Roadrunners on Friday evening in Brownson Arena in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's basketball matchup.
Lopez scored the final seven points for the Mavericks and finished the night with a team-high 18 points. He also added four rebounds and three assists. His go-ahead three ball was his only make of the night from beyond the arc (1-for-6).
The Mavericks led for a majority of the second half but MSU Denver inched back in.
With 2:47 to play, Roadrunner Brian Howard banked in a three-pointer and was fouled for a four-point play to give MSU Denver a one-point advantage at 61-60.
After Lopez hit his shot with eight second left, Colorado Mesa had to survive a flurry of shots and putbacks. MSU Denver hit one after the final buzzer went off and after a brief review the referees confirmed the shot was late.
CJ Davis was the only other Maverick in double figure with 16 points.
Colorado Mesa outshot Metro on the evening 42.1-40.4 but were outrebounded 38-31. The Roadrunners ended with a 15-4 advantage in second chance points.
Colorado Mesa improved to 4-14 on the season and 3-9 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while MSU Denver falls to 10-7 overall and 6-5 in the conference.
The Mavericks will be back in action tomorrow night with a showdown with UCCS at 7:30pm in Brownson Arena.
