DURANGO, COLO. – The No. 18 Colorado Mesa University football team scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to secure a thrilling 34-28 win at Fort Lewis Saturday (Sept. 24).
Fort Lewis quarterback Bo Coleman gave the Skyhawks an early 7-0 lead after rushing 15-yards to the endzone to complete a 14-play, 75-yard drive at 8:12 of the first quarter.
The Mavericks would get on the board in the first quarter with a 35-yard field goal from
Ryan Sheehan.
The second quarter featured touchdowns from both teams.
Bo Coleman connected with Arealous Hughes for a 65-yard touchdowns pass at 11:37 for FLC, and
Jonathon Beverly rumbled six yards to the endzone with 7:33 left in the first for CMU.
FLC lead 14-10 at the half and added to its lead with another long touchdown pass in the third quarter.
DJ Robinson caught a 66-yard pass from Bo Coleman to extend the Fort Lewis lead to 21-10.
Running back
David Tann, who finished with a game-high 119 all-purpose yards, scored his team-leading fifth touchdown of the season on a seven-yard run with 1:38 remaining in the third quarter to pull the Mavs within four, 21-17.
Bo Coleman engineered one last scoring drive for FLC leading the Skyhawks 80-yards down the field on 10 plays and finishing with a 17-yard pass to Jordan Gillen to give FLC a 28-17 lead with 11:29 remaining.
CMU responded with a 71-yard drive on 11 plays that finished with a 22-yard field goal from
Ryan Sheehan with 7:37 remaining.
Sam Mabany got the ball back for CMU recovering a fumble at midfield.
Sean Rubalcaba completed a 29-yard touchdown pass to
Virnel Moon on fourth and 10 from the FLC-29 yard line to pull the Mavericks within two 28-26. A personal-foul penalty moved the Mavericks two-point conversion attempt back to the 18-yard line which CMU failed to convert.
Fort Lewis's following drive would start on their own seven-yard line after a fair catch by DJ Robinson. The Skyhawks looked to punt on a fourth and one with 2:36 remaining, but the snap sailed over the head of the punter and was recovered in the endzone by
Blake Nelson.
Rubalcaba completed the two-point conversion to Moon but another personal-foul penalty would force the Mavericks to kick off from its own 10-yard line.
Fort Lewis would start its final drive on its own 39-yard line but the Colorado Mesa defense stopped the drive on downs.
The Mavericks special teams have accounted for the winning play in its last two wins.
CMU scored 24 of its 34 points in the game off of turnovers.
Blake Nelson intercepted one pass and recovered a fumble in the end zone.
Sam Mabany recovered a fumble, and
Marcus Cross intercepted the other pass for CMU.
FLC led in total offense 442 yards to 349 and in time of possession 36:30 to 23:30.
CMU quarterback
Sean Rubalcaba completed 15-of-32 passes for 212 yards.
Today was the first game this season that CMU did not have a player with over 100 yards receiving as
Marcus Hines finished with a team-high 64 yards.
Fort Lewis did not record a punt in the game.
Colorado Mesa (4-0, 4-0) will host CSU-Pueblo Oct. 1
