Football Heads to Durango

No. 18 Colorado Mesa will play at Fort Lewis Saturday (Sept. 24). The Mavericks will look to remain undefeated, while the Skyhawks snapped their two-game losing streak with a win at Adams State last week. 

Polls
Colorado Mesa moved up five spots in the AFCA Div. II National Poll after upsetting then-No. 10 Colorado Mines who fell to No. 23. Complete poll on page four. 

Series History
Colorado Mesa leads the series with Fort Lewis 30-11-1 and is 15-5-1 against the Skyhawks in Durango. CMU has won eight of the last nine meetings between the schools and has not lost in Durango since 2005. 

Interceptions
Colorado Mesa is one of 16 team in Div. II and the only RMAC school that has not thrown an interception this season. CMU has intercepted five passes this season, second most in the RMAC and 22nd most in Div. II. 

Turnovers
CMU has only turned the ball over once this season, second-best in NCAA Div. II. The Mavs rank 12 in Div. II in turnover margin at +1.67. 

National Leader
Ryan Sheehan leads all of NCAA Div. II in field goals per game with 2.67 per game. He ranks 22nd in field goal percentage at .889 (8-9). His lone miss of the season was his first attempt of the season from 37-yards against Western State. 

Undefeated
Colorado Mesa and Air Force are the only two undefeated college football teams in the state of Colorado. 

Ranked Teams
Colorado Mesa has beaten two of the last three ranked teams it has faced. Colorado Mesa defeated No. 10 Colorado Mines 41-40 on Sept. 15, 2016 and No. 12 Colorado Mines 31-17 on Oct. 31, 2015. No. 4 CSUP defeated CMU 51-20 on Nov. 7, 2015. 

Even Scoring
Colorado Mesa has scored at least 24 points in each quarter this season. 

Red Zone Offense
Colorado Mesa has been nearly automatic inside the red zone this season scoring 93.8% (15-16) of the time, best in the RMAC and 20th in Div. II. CMU has scored eight touchdowns and kicked seven field goals in their 15 trips inside the red zone.  

Passing Offense
Colorado Mesa ranks ninth in Div. II in passing offense averaging 340.7 yards per game and 16th in team passing efficiency at 169.47. Quarterback Sean Rubalcaba ranks in the top-25 in six different statistical categories; ninth in passing yards (963), 10th in passing yards per game (321.0), 17th in total  offense (337.0), 20th in yards per pass attempt (9.35), 21st in completions per game (22.33) and 24th in passing efficiency (162.8).

Receiving Game
Colorado Mesa has had a player finish with 100+ yards receiving in each game this season and it has been a different player each time. Marcus Hines finished with 114 yards against Western State, Virnel Moon tallied 161 yards against Chadron State and Josh Brown accumulated 126 yards against Colorado Mines. 

Field Goals
Colorado Mesa has not had a field goal kicked against them this season. 

Tackle Machine
Blake Nelson ranks second on the team with 21 tackles and ranks seven in the nation and first in the league in sacks with 4.5. 

Blocks
Dustin Rivas secured the victory at Colorado Mines after blocking an extra point in the second overtime at Colorado Mines. He has blocked the last two extra points for CMU with his previous block coming at CSUP on Nov. 7, 2015. 

Overtime
Colorado Mesa has played an overtime game each of the last three seasons and has won of those three games. 

Looking Ahead
Colorado Mesa will host defending RMAC Champion CSU-Pueblo on Oct. 1st for Parents Weekend.
