Mavericks Claim Fifth Straight RMAC Championship

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Davis Cantwell couldn't have picked a better time to hit his first collegiate home run. Cantwell hit a game-tying two-run home run to left field to tie the game at 3-3 in the ninth inning. Kyle Serrano delivered the go-ahead RBI single five batters later to give Colorado Mesa a 4-3 win over Colorado Mines on Sunday afternoon.

The win gives the Mavericks their fifth straight RMAC regular season championship and their 23rd conference championship since 1977.

Colorado Mines took the early lead, scoring a single run in the bottom half of the second inning.

The Mavericks were able to tie it up in the top half of the fourth inning on a RBI single by Davis Cantwell.

The Orediggers would get a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth on a 2-run double by Nate Olinger, to give Mines a 3-1 lead. The score would remain that way until the ninth.

Oredigger starter Christian Rooney had the Mavericks off balance all day but ran out of gas in the ninth inning.

Rooney walked Ben Chamberlin to lead off the inning then Cantwell stepped to the plate. On a 2-1 pitch, Cantwell lifted a ball to left field that cleared the left field fence. The fifth year senior finished the day 2-for-4 with three runs driven in.

Kyle Serrano drove in Lane LaCrone five batters later to give the Mavericks their first and only lead of the game at 4-3.

Nick Borowski earned the win on the mound, pitching the final four and two-thirds innings of shutout baseball. He allowed just four hits and struck out four.

Colorado Mesa finished the regular season with a 39-10 overall record.

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament will begin on Thursday May 12 at Suplizio Field. The Mavericks will take on Adams State on Thursday at 7pm.
