Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa stranded 12 runners on base in a 7-6 loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville in an elimination game on Friday afternoon (May 20) at Suplizio Field, ending the Mavericks season.
Colorado Mesa scored a single run in the first three innings to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
In the first inning, the Mavericks scored on a sacrifice fly by
Andrew Contreras that scored
Alex Fife from third. Fife reached on a single to lead the game off.
Nick Borowski had a RBI single to score
PJ Gonzalez in the second inning. Gonzalez hit a one out double down the right field line and finished the game 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
Sophomore
Garrett Ball led off the third inning with a double that hit high off the mini monster in left field. Ball came around to score on a RBI single up the middle by
John Ballard.
Texas A&M-Kingsville answered with four runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning, behind three home runs, to take a 4-3 lead.
Colorado Mesa came back and scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-4 lead.
Borowski drew a bases loaded walk to force in Ball followed by a two-run single by
Zach McLeod that brought in Gonzalez and Ballard.
The Javelinas evened the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Kingsville led off with a single to put a runner on first with one out. After a flyout, Hayden Vesely laced a single to right field which stayed down and got past
Alex Fife which brought around Dalton Perry for the winning run.
Ball, Borowski and Ballard each finished the game 2-for-4.
Tanner Herdt took the ball for the Mavericks and went five innings. Herdt allowed five runs on seven hits and didn't walk anyone. He was pulled in the sixth inning after taking a line drive off of his calf muscle.
Borowski came in and took the tough luck loss. He pitched three and two-thirds and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and struck out four.
The Mavericks end their season with a 43-13 overall record.
