Mavericks and Roadrunners Split Doubleheader

DENVER, Colo. – After two days of rainy and snowy weather, Colorado Mesa and MSU Denver were able to play some baseball on Monday afternoon. The two teams split a doubleheader with Colorado Mesa winning game one, 7-2 and the Roadrunners claiming game two, 5-1.

In the series opener, Colorado Mesa scored two runs in the third, fourth, and eighth innings en route to a 7-2 win over MSU Denver.

The Mavericks had 10 hits in the game with just one of those coming for extra bases, an Andrew Contreras double to lead off the sixth inning.

Ben Chamberlin finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs driven in to lead the offensive attack.

Alex Fife and James Young III each had two hits as well.

Senior Matt Allen started the series opener for the first time in his career and didn't disappoint. Allen pitched seven and a third innings and allowed two runs on four hits, walked one and struck out nine to move is season record to 5-0 on the season.

Tyler Ehlers pitched a scoreless ninth with a pair of strikeouts.

In the night cap of the doubleheader, all the runs in the game were scored on home runs but MSU Denver had more than Colorado Mesa in a 5-1 victory over the Mavericks.

The Mavericks tried mounting a comeback in the seventh inning with Alex Fife leading the inning off with a home run to right. But, that's all they could muster in the inning, stranding runners on first and third when the game ended.

Colorado Mesa left 11 runners on base in the game.

Fife, Kyle Serrano, and Garrett Ball each had two hits in the game.

Tanner Herdt was tagged with the loss.

The Mavericks will close out the regular season on the road at Colorado Mines with the series beginning on Friday. Colorado Mesa needs one win to claim the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season championship.
