Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Top seeded Colorado Mesa's comeback effort fell short on Thursday afternoon at Suplizio Field in an 8-6 loss to Lubbock Christian in the opening round of the NCAA South Central Baseball Regional.
The Chaparrals jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning with Colorado Mesa starter
Matt Allen lasting just a third of an inning in his second career regional start.
Colorado Mesa stormed back and evened the score in the fourth inning after scoring two in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth.
Lubbock Christian took the lead for good after a pinch hit home run in the top half of the seventh inning gave the Chaps an 8-5 lead.
The Mavericks scored one in the ninth but that was all they could muster.
Colorado Mesa had four of their nine hits go for extra bases.
Senior outfielder
Alex Fife went 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored while
Andrew Contreras went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs driven in and a run scored.
Freshman
John Beaudrie came in relief and pitched six and a third innings including five and two-thirds straight scoreless. He allowed two runs on six hits, striking out two but was tagged with the loss.
Chaparral Guillaume Blanchette picked up the win and improved to 12-2 on the season.
Colorado Mesa will play Texas A&M-Kingsville tomorrow (May 20) at 12pm in an elimination game.
