Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Top-seeded Colorado Mesa erupted for 11 runs en route to an 11-1 opening round victory over the Adams State Grizzlies in the RMAC Tournament on Thursday evening at Suplizio Field.
Senior righty
Matt Allen was flat out dominant on the mound for the Mavericks. Allen pitched seven innings and allowed one run on six hits, walked two and struck out a career-high 12. He improved to 6-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 2.60 on the year.
Colorado Mesa jumped on the board in the fourth inning on a RBI double down the right field line by
Greg Reynolds. That play was followed by an RBI single by
Davis Cantwell to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead.
The Mavericks erupted for five runs in the fifth inning to give Colorado Mesa a 7-0 lead. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double by
Nick Borowski.
Adams scored their lone run in the sixth inning but the Mavericks answered back in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI single by
Andrew Contreras.
A pair of home runs highlighted the Mavericks three-run seventh inning.
Davis Cantwell stepped to the plate and delivered a line drive, solo shot over the left field mini monster. It was his second home run in as many games.
Three batters later,
Alex Fife hit a home run to right field for his sixth home run of the season.
Fife finished the night with three hits while Reynolds, Cantwell and Borowski all finished with two hits.
The win gives the Mavericks their 40
th win of the season and have now won 40 or more games for four straight seasons and nine of the last 14 seasons.
Colorado Mesa will take on RMAC-rival CSU-Pueblo tomorrow at 12pm in the RMAC semifinals. The game will be broadcast on 101.1FM/1340am The Team and live video streaming on Stretch Internet.
