GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. – The Colorado Mesa University softball team opened the RMAC Tournament with a 9-1 win over Adams State Thursday (April 28).
Makayla Kovac showed the crowd why she was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week by hitting back-to-back homeruns. The Erie, Colo., native blasted a solo homerun to left center in the bottom of the first inning.
She followed up with a two-run blast to right center as part of a six run second inning for the Mavericks.
Kaila Jacobi was the first Mav to reach base in the second with a double to center field, and Kelli Mrofcza followed up with a walk. The pair would score on a double to center field by Alex Dufour.
Baylee Boren drove in Dufour with a single before Kovac cleared the bases with her homerun.
Marissa Harmon scored the lone run for Adams State with a homerun to center field in the fourth inning.
Mesa ended the game early in the fifth with two runs.
Makayla Kovac reached base for the third time after being hit by a pitch. She advanced to second on a ground out and to third on a single by
Zoe Pakes.
Kaila Jacobi drove in the final two runs with a triple down the right field line.
Kovac finished 2-for-2 with two homeruns, three RBIs and three runs scored.
McKenzie Surface threw the complete game win allowing one run on three hits.
Colorado Mesa (37-9), the RMAC Regular Season Champion, will face Colorado Mines (20-22) Friday (April 29).
