Mavericks Erupt for 25 Runs in Win

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The fifth-ranked Colorado Mesa baseball team pounded out a season-high 25 hits and scored a season-high 25 runs in a 25-8 win over the Colorado Christian Cougars on a windy Saturday afternoon at Suplizio Field.

After falling behind in the first three innings, Colorado Mesa erupted for seven runs in the third and fourth innings and then they put up a six spot in the seventh inning.

PJ Gonzalez delivered the big hit in the seven-run third when he crushed a three-run home run down the left field line to give the Mavericks the lead for good. Gonzalez finished the game 2-for-6 with five runs driven in.

James Young III had a big three-run double in the seven-run fourth inning. Young had came on as a pinch-hitter in the inning and finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored and three runs driven in.

A pair of seldom used players truly gave the Mavericks a spark in the middle innings. Josh Shapiro had two hits, both sharply hit singles up the middle, while Andrew Contreras finished with three hits and three runs driven in, including a pair of doubles.

Sophomore Taylor Prokopis picked up the win in relief. Prokopis allowed two runs on two hits and struck out three in three innings of work. He improved his season record to 3-0.

The two teams will conclude their season series tomorrow with a nine-inning game beginning at 12pm at Suplizio Field.
