SPEARFISH, S.D. – MSU Denver snapped the No. 18 Colorado Mesa University softball team's 29-game winning streak with a 2-1 win Friday (April 22).
The loss was the first for Colorado Mesa since Feb. 27th when they lost to Colorado Christian 3-2.
The Roadrunners scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Annika Anderson in the fourth inning.
Sarena Espinoza hit a solo homerun in the sixth to extend Metro's lead to 2-0.
The Mavericks finally got on the board in the seventh inning with an RBI single by
Baylee Boren that scored
Nicole Robinson.
The Mavs out-hit the Roadrunners 8-5. Metro committed four errors in the game compared to zero for Mesa.
McKenzie Surface took the loss for CMU allowing both earned runs on five hits.
Colorado Mesa earned a split on the day with a 6-3 win over Black Hills State.
The Mavs opened the game with four runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run homerun by
Makayla Kovac.
Kovac followed up with a double in the second inning that scored
Baylee Boren. Kovac would score on a single by
Zoe Pakes.
Black Hills countered with solo homeruns in the third and sixth innings.
BHSU's third and final run came on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
Baylee Boren led the Mavs batting 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Rochelle Talamantes allowed all three runs in five innings of work.
Joslynn Lopez earned the save allowing two hits over two innings.
Colorado Mesa (35-8, 34-2) will close out the regular season with games against MSUD and BHSU Saturday (April 23).
