GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – After falling behind 1-0 and 3-1, Colorado Mesa battled back and picked up a 5-4 win over the visiting Colorado Christian Cougars on Fireworks Friday Night presented by Alpine Bank. The Mavericks improved to 35-7 on the season and 24-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
After falling behind 1-0, the Mavericks answered back with a run on a RBI double by
Zach McLeod that scored
Trevor Elcock. McLeod finished the game 2-for-4.
Once again the Mavericks found themselves behind heading to the bottom of the sixth inning but answered for three runs in the inning. The inning was highlighted by RBI singles by Elcock and
James Young III.
The Mavericks picked up a huge insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a RBI double by
JJ Carr who came in as a defensive replacement the inning before.
The Colorado Mesa pitching and defense worked out of a pair of jams in the game.
Tyler Ehlers came into the game with runners on second and third and nobody out with two runs already in. Ehlers induced a ground out, an infield popup and a fly out to get out of the jam with no extra damage.
Nick Borowski worked out the second jam with runners on second and third and nobody out, Colorado Christian attempted to safety squeeze but Borowski was able to get the runner out at home. Three pitches later, he got a double play ball to get out of the inning.
Ehlers picked up the win on the mound and improved to 4-0 on the season while Borowski earned his sixth save of the season.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow for a single nine inning game beginning at 1pm.
