GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. – The Colorado Mesa University softball team claimed the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship Saturday (April 16).
Colorado Mesa won both games of the doubleheader with Western New Mexico 7-2, 11-4 to extend its winning streak to 27 games.
The Mustangs scored the first run of the game with a run in the first inning with three singles.
The Mavericks countered with a run in the fourth scoring on a pair of singles.
Both teams added one run in the fifth, before CMU tacked on five runs in the sixth.
Kaila Jacobi blasted a three-run homerun as part of the five-run inning for the Mavs on six hits.
McKenzie Surface threw a strong game for the Mavs to earn her 16
th win of the season allowing two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.
The Mustangs opened game two with a pair of runs in the first, but the Mavericks blew the game open with six runs in the bottom of the inning.
Mesa's six runs came on four singles, a double and a two-run triple by
Sarah Phillis.
Linzy Granger hit a two-run homer in the second for WNMU, but CMU added one run in the third and fourth.
Mesa ended the day with a solo homerun by
Jessica Boruff and a two-run homer by
Zoe Pakes in the sixth.
Sarah Phillis went 2-for-3 at the plate with a game-high three RBIs.
Rochelle Talamantes (9-2) allowed four runs, two earned, on six hits and two strikeouts.
Colorado Mesa (24-7, 23-1) and Western New Mexico (21-28, 17-17) will close out the season series with a doubleheader Sunday (April 17).
