Box Score LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Fifth-ranked Colorado Mesa put up six runs in the fifth inning and was able to hold on for a 6-5 win over New Mexico Highlands on a snowy, Saturday afternoon at Brandt Field. The Mavericks completed the four-game sweep and ended March with a 17-1 record.
Colorado Mesa trailed 4-0 heading into the fifth inning. The Mavericks scored their six runs on six hits and no Cowboy errors.
PJ Gonzalez delivered the big hit in the inning with a three-run double down the left field line.
Gonzalez finished the game 2-for-4 with those three runs driven in.
Ben Chamberlin finished the series with a .536 (9-for-16) batting average in the series after going 2-for-5 with a double in the finale.
Reliever
Taylor Prokopis picked up the win in relief. Prokopis (2-0) went five innings and allowed one run on four hits and struck out five.
Nick Borowski earned his fourth save, pitching a perfect ninth inning with a strikeout on the last batter of the game.
Colorado Mesa improved to 25-4 on the season with a 15-1 record in the RMAC while Highlands fell to 5-24 with a 2-14 record in the RMAC.
The Mavericks will return home for a four-game series with Adams State beginning on Friday at Suplizio Field.
