Box Score LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Fifth-ranked Colorado Mesa picked up the first win of the series on Thursday afternoon in a 6-1 win over New Mexico Highlands in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference baseball contest.
The Mavericks scored their first run of the game on a RBI single by
Zach McLeod that scored
Greg Reynolds in the top of the second inning.
The same duo accounted for the Mavericks second run that came in the top half of the fourth inning. McLeod lifted a fly ball to center field that ended up scoring Reynolds on the sacrifice to give the Mavericks the 2-0 lead.
McLeod finished the game 1-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in while Reynolds was also 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
Colorado Mesa added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning a two-run blast by Ben Chamberlin. The home run went out over the left field wall and scored catcher
Kyle Serrano on the play.
Chamberlin collected three hits in the game with two RBIs.
An inning later, right fielder
Alex Fife belted a solo home run to right field to extend the lead to 5-0. The hit extended Fife's hit streak to 12 games.
Serrano added to the lead in the eighth inning on a RBI single that scored Fife from third to give Colorado Mesa a 6-0 lead. He finished the game 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored.
New Mexico Highland threatened in the bottom half of the eighth inning, picking up one run after getting walked in and stranded the bases loaded in the inning.
Freshman ace
JR McDermott dominated on the mound to pick up his fourth win of the season. McDermott went seven shutout inning and allowed just three hits, struck out nine and walked two.
The Mavericks improved their record to 22-4 on the season and 12-1 in the RMAC while Highlands fell to 5-21 and 2-11 in the conference.
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1pm.
