Softball Completes Series Sweep in Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University softball team has now won 15 in a row after sweeping the series against CSU-Pueblo on Monday (March 21). They won the first game 5-1 and the second 7-4.

McKenzie Surface improved her record to 9-3 in game one by only allowing six hits and striking out four batters.

Kaila Jacobi scored the first run of the game for the Mavs in the second inning after Sarah Phillis hit a double, but the Thunderwolves would come back and score a run of their own in the bottom of the third.

Both teams were held scoreless until the top of the sixth inning. The Mavericks went on a four-run streak to put them up 5-1, and the Thunderwolves wouldn't be able to answer.

In the second game, CMU didn't waste any time getting on the board. They scored five runs on just two hits.

A homer by Moriah Turney of CSU-Pueblo put them on the board but at the end of the first CMU led 5-2.

Makayla Kovac boosted the Mavs' lead in the second with a two-run homerun, and Baylee Boren added a run of her own in the third to make it 8-2.

Brooke Hodgson kept things rolling for CMU in the next inning by tripling to left field. Makayla Kovac scored on the play, and Brooke Hodgson would score on the next play thanks to a wild pitch. Blake Adams would also end up scoring to give CMU four runs in the inning.

CSU-Pueblo ended up scoring two more runs, but that was as close as they got.

Makayla Kovac finished the game with three runs on two hits and tallied two more RBIs.

Colorado Mesa closes out their road trip with a four-game series at Adams State (March 25-26).
