PUEBLO, Colo. – Makayla Kovac set the RMAC career record for RBIs with 214 when the Colorado Mesa University softball team swept the doubleheader against CSU-Pueblo on Sunday (March 20). They won game one 13-2 and game two 7-4.
 
Both teams got off to a slow start in the first game of the day.
 
The Mavericks finally got on the scoreboard with five runs on five hits in the third inning. Baylee Boren got things going with a RBI to score Nicole Robinson. Makayla Kovac then singled to make the score 3-0. Brooke Hodgson closed out the top of the third with a two-run home run.
 
CMU would score one run in the fifth before CSU-Pueblo scored in the sixth thanks to a two-run home run by Madison Wolfe to make it a 6-2 game.
 
Colorado Mesa responded in the seventh with a seven run outburst. With the bases loaded, Brooke Hodgson singled to centerfield, allowing Baylee Boren and Alexandria Dufour to score.
 
Makayla Kovac and Brooke Hodgson would also score before Nicole Robinson came up to bat with the bases loaded. Sarah Phillis, Joslynn Lopez and Zoe Pakes all scored after Nicole Robinson hit a double to put the Mavs up 13-2.
 
McKenzie Surface improved to 8-3 by only allowing two hits on six runs and striking out three batters.
 
The second game went into extra innings after CSU-Pueblo tied the game up in the bottom of the seventh.
 
The Thunderwolves got the early lead on the Mavericks, going up 2-0 after two innings, but the Mavs went on a mini run of their own and scored one run in the fifth and two in the sixth after a two-run home run by Zoe Pakes to make it 3-2.
 
The game remained close. Jordan Sheard would get an unearned run for the Thunderwolves to tie it up at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth.
 
An RBI by Makayla Kovac in the top of the seventh sent Alexandria Dufour home and put CMU back on top 4-3. That was the RBI that set the RMAC career record and surpassed Kaitlynn Barnes of Western New Mexico (2009-13).
 
The Mavs couldn't close the game. Two errors by the Mavs gave the Thunderwolves the opportunity to tie the game again and go into extra innings.
 
Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the twelfth. Brooke Hodgson, Kaila Jacobi and Kellie Mrofcza would all score unearned runs to put CMU up 7-4. That would be the final.
 
Colorado Mesa closes out their four-game series against CSU-Pueblo tomorrow (March 21) with the doubleheader beginning at 11 am.
