GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. –
James Young III hit two home runs for fifth-ranked Colorado Mesa in a 13-4 win over Division I Northern Colorado on Wednesday afternoon at Suplizio Field. The win gave the Mavericks the mini two-game sweep of the Bears.
Young finished the game 2-for-5 with five runs driven in to bring his season total to 18, leading the Mavericks. His first home run was driven out to center field that hit the 'Peachy' sign while his second was a moon shot that cleared nearly cleared the fence that leads to the golf course.
The Mavericks jumped on the board in the first inning after
Alex Fife led off the game with a single followed by a Ben Chamberlin home run to right field. The home run for Chamberlin was his fourth in six games.
Chamberlin finished the game 4-for-4 with four runs scored, four runs driven in, and a pair of doubles while Fife went 4-for-5 with three runs scored after returning from injury.
Sophomore shortstop
Zach McLeod hit his first home run of the season but did it the unconventional method. McLeod laced a sharply hit ball to center field where the defender dove for it and missed it, allowing the ball to roll all the way to the center field wall. It allowed McLeod to circle the bases for the inside-the-park home run.
Freshman pitcher
Kyle Leahy earned the win in relief of starter
Jarrett Bott. Leahy pitched two shutout innings, allowing a walk while striking out one.
Six pitchers threw in the game for the Mavericks.
Colorado Mesa improved to 18-3 on the season and are now riding a 10-game winning streak while Northern Colorado falls to 4-15 on the year.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Friday for a crucial Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup with Colorado Mines beginning at 6:05pm at Suplizio Field.
