GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. – The Colorado Mesa University baseball team scored six unanswered runs to defeat MSU Denver 6-4 and earn the series sweep of the Roadrunners Sunday (March 13).
After two scoreless innings, Metro got on the board in the third with one run on two Mesa errors.
The Roadrunners picked up two more runs in the fourth. Cale O'Donnell led-off the inning with a homerun to center field. Nick Comito was walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single up the middle by Jake Ekman.
MSUD plated its final run in the fifth on two hits.
Facing a 4-0 deficit, CMU scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
JJ Carr singled and
Trevor Elcock doubled to open the inning. Carr scored the first Mesa run of the inning on an RBI ground out by
Joey Samuels.
John Ballard was hit by a pitch and then stole second to give CMU runners on second and third. Mesa scored on a sacrifice fly by Ben Chamberlin and a single to right field by
Zach McLeod.
The Mavs added three more runs in the seventh. Ben Chamberlin hit a two-run homer, and
James Young III hit a solo homer. Chamberlin finished with a game-high three RBIs, and
James Young III went 3-4 at the plate.
Hits ended 10-8 in favor of the Mavs.
Tyler Day (1-1) earned the win in relief giving up three hits and striking out two in four innings of work.
Nick Borowski earned his second save of the season.
Colorado Mesa (16-3, 8-0) will host Div. I Northern Colorado Tuesday (March 15).Â
