Box ScoreLAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team survived a late run by New Mexico Highlands to escape with a 70-66 win on Saturday evening at the John A. Wilson Complex.
New Mexico Highlands outscored the Mavericks 27-17 in the fourth quarter and had the lead cut to two with 1:09 to play at 65-63 but the Mavericks were 5-of-6 from the charity stripe in the final minute of the game.
Colorado Mesa led for over 37 minutes of the game and led by as many as 18 points with 1:12 to play in the third quarter at 51-33.
The Mavericks had an advantage in points in the paint (24-20), points off turnovers (14-8) and second chance points (15-7).
Sydney Small paced the Mavericks with a game-high 21 points. Small added three rebounds and two steals.
Teammate
Bryanna Adams finished the night with 17 points and handed out five assists and pulled in four rebounds.
Jaylyn Duran chipped in 10 points in 24 minutes of action off the bench.
Kaylani Maiava led the Cowgirls with 19 points.
Colorado Mesa improved to 14-7 on the season and 11-6 in the RMAC while New Mexico Highlands fell to 3-18 and 1-16 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The Mavericks will continue their long four-game road trip next weekend when they head to South Dakota for games against South Dakota Mines and Black Hills State.
