The Vikings would explode for eight runs, two earned, on five hits in the bottom of the first. WWU relied on small ball with a pair of doubles and three singles accounting for its five hits.
Western Washington took advantage of three Colorado Mesa errors in the inning. Adding to the frustration for CMU, the Mavericks had a passed ball, wild pitch and hit a batter in the inning.
The Vikings added one more run in the second compliments of a pair of doubles.
Sarah Phillis was a bright spot for the Mavericks recording a double and a triple in her two at-bats.
McKenzie Surface took the loss for CMU allowing eight runs, two earned, in one inning of work.
Colorado Mesa (0-1) will face San Bernadino and California Baptist Saturday (Feb. 6).Â
