GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. – The Colorado Mesa University softball team improved to 7-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference after picking up a pair of wins Sunday (Feb. 28).
Colorado Mesa defeated Chadron State 9-5 and followed up with a 5-2 victory over Colorado Christian.
Chadron got on the board first with a run in the top of the first, but Mesa scored three runs in the bottom of the inning. Alex Dufour led off the inning with a triple, and Baylee
Boren and
Makayla Kovac followed up with doubles.
Kaila Jacobi drove in the third Maverick run with a single through the left side.
The Eagles added another run in the second, but the Mavs capitalized on three errors in the inning to score two more runs.
Mesa scored a game-high four runs in the fourth on four hits and one error.
Chadron would score three runs on two hits in the sixth.
McKenzie Surface earned her third win of the season allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits with three strikeouts.
Colorado Mesa split the weekend series with Colorado Christian with a 5-2 win to close the weekend.
Zoe Pakes led off the second inning with a home run to center field for her eighth RBI of the weekend.
The Mavericks opened the third inning with four straight hits to score a game-high three runs.
Makayla Kovac blasted a homerun to right center to extend the CMU lead to 5-0 in the fifth. Kovac went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored.
CCU broke up the CMU shutout with a pair of runs in the seventh on three hits.
Brooke Hodgson improved to 4-0 after giving up two runs on seven hits and four strikeouts.
Colorado Mesa (8-7, 7-1) will host Regis March 5-6.Â
