Mavericks and Red Storm Split Doubleheader

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Third-ranked Colorado Mesa and 13th ranked Dixie State split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Suplizio Field. The Mavericks move their record to 8-2 while Dixie State improved to 11-2.

In game one, Kyle Serrano's shot to deep left center scored Trevor Elcock in the bottom of the ninth to give Colorado Mesa a 5-4 win over Dixie State in the day's opener.

The Mavericks jumped out to a 3-0 lead after six innings but the Red Storm came back in the top half of the seventh with three runs (one earned) to tie the game.

Colorado Mesa took the lead again in the bottom of the eighth on a error by the Dixie third baseman that allowed James Young to score and give the Mavericks another short lived lead.

Dixie State knotted it at 4-4 on a RBI double by Ryan Rodriguez in the ninth.

Trevor Elcock led off the ninth with a double that hit high off the mini monster, leading to Serrano's walk-off.

Mike Roberts picked up the win in relief and moved to 1-0.

Bligh Madris finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs while Alex Fife finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

In the night cap, Dixie State raced out to a 5-0 lead and Colorado Mesa couldn't catch up in a 6-5 win for the Red Storm.

The Mavericks picked up two runs in the fourth and fifth innings but couldn't get any closer.

James Young III hit a two-run homer in the fourth and finished the game 1-for-3.

The night cap featured the debuts of a pair of freshman and they didn't disappoint.

Tanner Rempel got the start as the designated hitter and went 2-for-3 with a RBI while AJ Landis came in relief and pitched the final five innings of the game and allowed one run (unearned) on five hits, striking out three.

The two teams will play the series finale tomorrow at noon at Suplizio Field in a nine-inning game.
