GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. – No. 2 Dixie State spoiled the home opener for the Colorado Mesa University softball team sweeping both games of the doubleheader Tuesday (Feb. 24).
The Red Storm won game one 12-1 and allowed only three Maverick hits in the contest.
Dixie led off the game with four runs on four hits in the first inning.
Mesa countered with one run in the bottom of the inning. Alex Dufour and
Makayla Kovac led off the inning with a pair of walks before Dufour scored on a double to right center field by
Brooke Hodgson.
DSU scored at least one run in each of the next four innings for the win.
McKenzie Surface allowed 10 runs, eight earned, on 10 hits in the loss.
Brooklyn Beardshear earned the complete game shutout in the second game for Dixie allowing four hits.
The Red Storm won the second game 3-0 with all three runs coming in the fourth inning.
Dixie opened the inning with a single and a double. DSU plated its first two runs of the game with back-to-back doubles.
The Mavs turned a double play, but Shelby Yung stole home during the next at-bat before Mesa got out of the inning with a ground out.
Alex Dufour tallied two of the Mavs four hits in the game.
Rochelle Talamantes struck out three, walked four, allowed five hits and game up all three earned runs in the loss for CMU.
Colorado Mesa (5-6) will host Chadron State and Colorado Christian this weekend (Feb. 27-28).
