James Young III's sacrifice fly that scored
Kyle Serrano in the ninth inning sealed the fourth-ranked Mavericks' 5-4 win over Cal Baptist on Saturday afternoon at Totman Field. The win also gave the Mavericks a 3-1 series win over the 28
th ranked Lancers.
Colorado Mesa loaded the bases with one out in the ninth when Young stepped to the plate. Young laced a sinking liner to the outfield which the outfielder made a diving catch. Serrano was originally ruled out for leaving early which was overturned to give the Mavericks the go-ahead run.
Alex Fife paced the Maverick hitters with three hits, a run scored and a run driven in.
Kyle Serrano was the only other Maverick with multiple hits with two.
Nick Cardinale got his first start of the season and was chased after two-plus innings and gave way to his bullpen which was stellar once again.
Four pitchers combined to pitch six and a third innings of shutout baseball allowing just five hits, two walks while striking out six.
Tanner Herdt earned the win pitching two and two-thirds allowing one hit and three strikeouts.
Nick Borowski picked up his second save of the season, getting the only batter he faced out.
Colorado Mesa is now 6-1 on the season while Cal Baptist fell to 6-4.
The Mavericks will return home to face another PacWest foe in Dixie State in a four game series at Suplizio Field starting on Friday.
