Mavericks Take Series From Lancers

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – James Young III's sacrifice fly that scored Kyle Serrano in the ninth inning sealed the fourth-ranked Mavericks' 5-4 win over Cal Baptist on Saturday afternoon at Totman Field. The win also gave the Mavericks a 3-1 series win over the 28th ranked Lancers.

Colorado Mesa loaded the bases with one out in the ninth when Young stepped to the plate. Young laced a sinking liner to the outfield which the outfielder made a diving catch. Serrano was originally ruled out for leaving early which was overturned to give the Mavericks the go-ahead run.

Alex Fife paced the Maverick hitters with three hits, a run scored and a run driven in.

Kyle Serrano was the only other Maverick with multiple hits with two.

Nick Cardinale got his first start of the season and was chased after two-plus innings and gave way to his bullpen which was stellar once again.

Four pitchers combined to pitch six and a third innings of shutout baseball allowing just five hits, two walks while striking out six.

Tanner Herdt earned the win pitching two and two-thirds allowing one hit and three strikeouts.

Nick Borowski picked up his second save of the season, getting the only batter he faced out.

Colorado Mesa is now 6-1 on the season while Cal Baptist fell to 6-4.

The Mavericks will return home to face another PacWest foe in Dixie State in a four game series at Suplizio Field starting on Friday.
