RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Fourth-ranked Colorado Mesa sprayed 15 hits around Totman Stadium on Thursday evening in a 9-1 win over No. 28 Cal Baptist in a matchup of two NCAA Division II heavyweights.
Out of the Mavericks 15 hits, 14 of them were singles with
Mitch Robinson's ninth inning three-run home run to left field the lone Colorado Mesa extra base hit.
Robinson finished the game 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three runs driven in.
Sophomore
Bligh Madris finished the game with three hits.
Both teams had opportunities in the early innings but couldn't convert.
The Mavericks had runners on in the first two innings but a pair of pickoffs thwarted the threat while the Lancers stranded the bases loaded in the first.
Colorado Mesa made the five Cal Baptist errors hurt with seven of their nine runs unearned.
Freshman
JR McDermott made his first start of his career and was brilliant. McDermott allowed one run on five hits, walked three and struck out three in five innings of work to earn his first win.
Senior
Tyler Ehlers earned the rule book save, pitching the final four innings allowing just a single hit, walked one and struck out two.
Lancer Tyson Miller was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs (two earned) on nine hits, walked one and struck out three. Miller was announced to the preseason Golden Spikes Watch List as the top amateur baseball player.
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 4pm mountain time.
