SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – Mackenzie Edwards finished with 25 kills and 30 digs for the Colorado Mesa University volleyball team in a five-set loss to No. 19 MSU Denver in the NCAA South Central Regional Thursday (Dec. 1). The Mavericks finish the season 18-10.
The win was the first for the Roadrunners in the NCAA Tournament since 2010.
The Mavericks won the first set 25-22 after hitting a team-high .290 (14-5-31).
The loss is just the second this season for the Mavericks when they won the first set.
Metro found its offensive groove in the second hitting a team-high .276 (11-3-29) to win 25-20. The Mavericks used a pair of multi-point runs to lead 12-8 early but the Mavericks would only record back-to-back points one more time in the set.
The Mavericks dominated the third set offensively and defensively. CMU hit .286 (17-3-49) and held MSUD to .049 (8-6-41), its lowest percentage of the match, to win 25-16.
The nine-point win was the largest margin of victory in the match.
The two teams traded the lead four times in the fourth set with neither team leading by more than four points. With the match tied at 21-21, the Roadrunners won four of the final five points to take a 25-22 win.
CMU and MSUD found themselves tied at 9-9 in the final set. The Mavericks would drop the set and match after committing several errors late. A ball handling error, a service ace and back-to-back attack errors would account for four of the final five points for the Roadrunners.
Edward's 25 kills were a season-high and her 30 digs were the most by a Maverick this season.
Taylor Woods (19) and
Naomi Pinnecoose (10) each finished in double digits in digs.
The Mavericks used three setters in the match.
Ali Svorinic led the trio with 26 assists,
Hana Peterman had 16 and
Samantha Ritter finished with six.
Mesa led 85-74 in digs. Metro led 11-4 in blocks but had 14 service errors to six by Mesa.
