No. 14 Colorado Mesa will play at No. 11 Midwestern State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday (Nov. 13).
Scouting the Mustangs
Midwestern State enters this weekend's match with a 16-3-1 overall record and posted a 13-1-0 mark in Heartland Conference play. The Mustangs have had 14 different players score a goal this season. MSU ranks 19th in the nation in scoring offense (2.4 gpg) and fifth in team goals against average (0.54 gaa). Gabriel Cavalcante and Christian Okeke lead the Mustangs with seven goals a piece.
RMAC Champs
Colorado Mesa won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament with a 1-0 win over Regis in the championship. Mesa posted a 1-1 tie against MSU Denver in the semifinals but adavnced to the championship after winning the shootout 4-1. This is the first year that the Mavericks have won the regular season and tournament championships in the same season. Mesa won the tournament championship in 2013 and the regular season title in 2014.

Briley Guarneri was named the tournament MVP after allowing just one goal in the semifinals and a shutout in the championship. The Mavericks had five other players named to the all-tournament team; James Mcghee,

The Series
This is the third straight season that the Mavericks and Mustangs have faced each other in the NCAA Tournament. The Mustangs posted a 4-2 win over the Mavericks in Wichita Falls in 2015. CMU defeated MSU 1-0 in Grand Junction in 2014. Midwestern State and Colorado Mesa met during the regular season in 2014 and 2015 with the Mustangs winning both meetings.

Roy Abergil has been a scoring machine this season and he currently ranks second in Div. II with 23 goals, one behind the national leader Leonardo Paiva of Notre Dame (Ohio). Abergil ranks in the top-25 nationally in five other categories; fourth in goals per game (1.15), fifth in total points (47), seventh in shots per game (2.6), eighth in game-winning goals (six) and 10th in points per game (2.35).

Colorado Mesa ranks tied for fifth and leads the RMAC with 11 shutouts this season.

The Mavericks lead the league and rank seventh in the nation in goals against average at 0.61.
