GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. –
Roberto Diaz scored in the 11
th minute to lift Colorado Mesa University to the 2016 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Championship over Regis University Sunday (Nov. 6).
Diaz collected a loose ball at the top of the box and sent a shot on goal that deflected off a Regis defender on its way to the goal.
Roy Abergil nearly netted a second goal for CMU when he sent a long chip shot over the RU goalie in the final minutes that was cleared off the line by a defender.
The CMU defense was outstanding in the match. The Mavericks allowed nine shots on goal, but CMU goalie
Briley Guarneri, who was named the tournament's most valuable player, was only forced to make one save.
The Mavericks had five other players named to the RMAC All-Tournament Team; James Mcghee,
Slater Elkind,
Moshe Perez,
Roberto Diaz and Luis Scraidt.
Colorado Mesa also won the RMAC Men's Soccer Tournament in 2013.
The RMAC Men's Soccer Tournament Champion does not earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Selections for the NCAA Div. II Soccer Tournament will be announced Monday (Nov. 7) at 4:30 pm.
Colorado Mesa will be seeking its third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.
