GUNNISON, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team opened up Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with a 71-42 win over Western State Colorado on the road in Paul Wright Gymnasium. The Mavericks improve to 4-1 on the season.
The Mavericks raced out to a 16-13 lead after the first quarter and never looked back as they built a 31-point lead with six minutes left in the fourth quarter. Colorado Mesa outscored the Mountaineers 21-10 in the second quarter and 20-9 in the third quarter.
Colorado Mesa owned a 32-16 edge on points in the paint and shot 52.8 percent (28-for-53) from the field. The Maverick bigs (
Ma'ata Epenisa,
Khadijah Vigil, and
Tori Catlett) combined for 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Vigil played 18 hard fought minutes and finished with eight points and six rebounds.
Sydney Small led all scorers with 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field. Small hit one three-pointer and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.
Nicole Archambeau and
Bryanna Adams each finished with double-digits with 13 and 10 respectively.
Western State's Kaylynn Bush led the Mountaineers with nine points.
The Mavericks will head to Salt Lake City to close out the opening week of RMAC play as they take on the Westminster Griffins at 5:30pm.
