SPEARFISH, S.D. – The No. 13 Colorado Mesa University football team finished with 510 yards of total offense but six turnovers lead to a 48-34 loss at Black Hills State Saturday (Oct. 8).
The loss snaps the Mavericks five-game winning streak and is the first lost to Black Hills State in program history.
The 'Jackets got on the board first with a 38-yard touchdown run by Phydell Paris at 9:54 of the first.
The Mavericks answered with a 45-yard field from
Ryan Sheehan at 7:20.
Mesa got the ball back after recovering an on-side kick and
David Tann capped the 35-yard scoring drive with a 10-yard touchdown run at 5:39 of the first quarter to lead 10-3.
Special teams came through again when
Josh Brown returned a punt 85-yards for a touchdown to extend the CMU lead to 17-7.
BHSU dominated the second quarter out-scoring CMU 24-3.
The 'Jackets scored on two passing touchdowns of 73- and 58- yards, ran for a 20-yard score and kicked a 25-yard field goal at the end of the first half.
Ryan Sheehan kicked a 38-yard field in the quarter, but CMU trailed 31-20 at the break.
CMU quarterback Sean Rubulcaba threw an interception on three straight drives in the third quarter, but Black Hills only scored one touchdown off the three picks.
Eystin Salum replaced Rubalcaba at quarterback and led the Mavericks on a seven-play, 75-yard scoring drive. Salum rushed twice for a combined 54 yards before completing a 17-yard pass to
Virnel Moon to trail 38-27.
Black Hills kicked a 40-yard field goal and scored a touchdown on a three-yard run to complete its scoring.
Salum ran 11-yards for a touchdown to complete a five-play, 75-yard drive with 2:23 remaining to cut the Black Hills lead to 48-34.
Salum would recover the on-side kick to keep the Mavericks come back alive. CMU moved the ball to the BHSU 14-yard line but a false start penalty paired with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty pushed the Mavericks back to the 34-yard line where the drive stalled out.
CMU was flagged eight times for 96 yards in the game.
Salum finished with a game-high 132 rushing yards (12.0 ypc) to become the first Maverick to rush for over 100 yards in a game this season. He led Mesa with 111 yards passing.
David Tann also eclipsed 100 yards rushing finishing with 121 yards (7.6 ypc).
Josh Brown was the Mavericks top receiver leading the team in catches (seven) and receiving yards (100). He finished with 190 all-purpose yards (100 receiving, 90 punt return).

Mesa finished with 307 yards (7.3 ypc) rushing shattered its previous season-high of 188 yards against Western State.
Black Hills scored 20 points off of four interceptions and two fumbles by Colorado Mesa.
Mesa was a perfect 4-4 on its trips inside the red zone scoring three touchdowns and one field goal.
Blake Nelson and
Antonio Clark combined for 21 tackles, and
Marcus Cross recorded his second interception of the season.
The defense recorded 12 tackles for a loss of 25 yards.
The 'Jackets led 36:17 to 23:43 in time of possession.
