GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa volleyball team withstood a late push from Colorado Christian on Friday evening (Oct. 14) to win 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 25-18, 26-28, 15-10) in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup.
In the first set, the Mavericks (14-3, 8-1 RMAC) took the final lead of the set at 20-19 after a Cougar service error and never looked back, taking the set 25-20.
Mackenzie Edwards had five kills while libero
Taylor Woods had nine digs in the set.
Colorado Christian (14-6, 6-3) tied the match up at a set a piece after winning the second set 28-26. The set featured 10 ties and just two lead changes with Colorado Mesa taking the biggest lead at 9-4.
Colorado Mesa outhit the Cougars .353-.333 in the set.
Freshman
Allison Smith had seven kills in the set and hit .438.
In the third set, Colorado Mesa came out and hit .241 and limited Colorado Christian to -.038 in winning the set 25-18. CMU had four blocks in the set while the Cougars committed 10 total errors in the set.
Smith added to her total with six kills in the set.
In the pivotal fourth set, Colorado Christian staved off three match points at 24-21 and battled back to take the set 28-26. The set featured eight ties and four lead changes with two coming in the final five points in the set.
In the game deciding set, the two teams traded points until the Mavericks scored two straight to make it 10-8. Senior
Kricket Adleman served four straight points to put the set at match point. A Cougar kill followed by a service error ended the match, giving the Mavericks the 15-10, 3-2 win.
Allison Smith finished with a career-high 24 kills and a .317 hitting percentage. She accounted for 24.5 total points in the match.
Sophomore Mackenzie Edwards recorded 23 kills and finished the double-double with 16 digs.
Setter
Ali Svorinic finished with 12.80 assists per set (64 total assists) and helped the Colorado Mesa hitters to a .261 hitting percentage in the match.
Four Mavericks finished with double-digit digs in the match (Pinnecoose-11, Adleman-13, Edwards-16, and Woods-22)
The Mavericks will host Colorado Mines tomorrow at 4pm in a showdown of two of the top teams in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
