GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The 24
th ranked Colorado Mesa men's soccer team scored a pair of first half goals and one second half goal en route to a 3-0 win over the Westminster Griffins on Wednesday evening at Walker Field in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's soccer match.
Malik Mennana put the Mavericks on the board in the fifth minute of the match. Mennana took a cross from
Kevin Del Mazo and flicked the ball over the keeper for the score. The goal was his third of the season and gave the Mavericks the 1-0 lead.
Senior
Roy Abergil scored the first of his two goals in the 26
th minute of the match. Abergil took a cross from
Moshe Perez and punched one past the keeper for the goal and the 2-0 Colorado Mesa lead.
Abergil's second goal came on a penalty kick at the 52 minute mark. It was his 16
th and 17
th goals of the season to push him into a tie for second in NCAA Div. II in total goals.
The Mavericks outshot Westminster 21-9 with 14 of those shots coming on goal.
Sophomore
Briley Guarneri earned his seventh shutout of the season and lowered his goals against average to a miniscule 0.66. He made four saves and faced nine shots.
The Mavericks will be on the road on Friday when they travel to Pueblo to face the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves at 7pm.
