COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Mesa's second half comeback fell short in a 65-55 loss to UCCS on Saturday evening in a RMAC women's basketball showdown at the Gallogly Events Center. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Mavericks.
The two teams played to a 32-32 draw in the first half. The see-saw battle saw the Mavericks lead by as many as three in the half and the Mountain Lions led by seven at one point.
The second half was a different story as UCCS outscored Colorado Mesa 13-3 in the third quarter.
When it was all said and done, UCCS led by as many as 19 points with 7:17 left in the fourth quarter.
Colorado Mesa cut the lead to nine with 2:09 to play but couldn't get any closer then eight with just seconds left to play in the game.
UCCS did their damage on the offensive glass as they grabbed 15 offensive rebounds that led to 21 second chance points. The Mountain Lions had a 44-33 edge in total rebounds.
Senior
Shyanne Halalilo led Colorado Mesa with 16 points as she was the only player in double figures. She shot 5-of-9 from the field and buried three three-point baskets.
Laurin Rivera finished with six points, five rebounds and five assists.
Erika Musante had eight points and five rebounds.
UCCS was led by Brittany Hernandez who finished with 25 points and 12 rebounds.
The Mavericks will return home next weekend for a pair of games against Fort Lewis on Friday night and Adams State on Saturday night.
