COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – UCCS had five players score in double figures to defeat Colorado Mesa University 86-82 in men's basketball action Saturday (Jan. 9).
UCCS enjoyed a 50-27 lead at halftime after closing the half with a 24-9 run. The Mountain Lions shot 56-percent (18-32) from the field, while the Mavericks shot 38-percent (12-31).
Mesa's offense improved to 51-percent (19-37) in the second and out-scored Colorado Springs 55-36.
CJ Davis drained back-to-back 3-pointers to give CMU a 73-71 lead with 4:11 remaining.
Ryan Stephan tied the game at 75 with 2:44 remaining.
UCCS led 84-79 before
CJ Davis drained his fifth 3-pointer of the game to pull CMU within two with 10 seconds remaining.
A pair of free throws combined with a last second 3-point attempt by
CJ Davis gave UCCS the win.
Free throws played a major role in the game with UCCS converting 22-of-31 attempts while CMU was 11-12.
Ryan Stephan led CMU with a game-high 22 points.
CJ Davis and
Eimer Lopez each finished with 17.
Alex Welsh led UCCS with 22.
CMU led in rebounds 33-31.
