GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Fourth ranked Colorado Mesa scored a pair of walk-off wins over the Colorado Mines Orediggers on Friday at Suplizio Field. The Mavericks pushed their mark to 41-6 on the season and 33-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
In game one,
James Young III's sacrifice bunt turned out to be the game winner as the Oredigger first baseman committed a throwing error that scored
Bligh Madris from second base in an 8-7 win.
Madris reached second after hitting a double to lead off the inning. He finished 3-for-3 in the game and hit his 18
th and 19
th doubles of the season. He also walked twice and scored twice.
Colorado Mesa fell behind early 4-0 and 5-1 before the fourth inning but came storming back, scoring two in the bottom of the fourth and three in the bottom of the fifth.
Alex Fife hit his fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Matt Allen earned the win in relief and improved to 6-1 on the season. Allen went four innings and allowed one run on four hits, walked none and struck out two.
In the nightcap, an NCAA Division II record crowd of 5,172 witnessed the second walk-off win of the day on an RBI double by
Kyle Serrano that scored
Alex Fife from first base to give Colorado Mesa a 4-3 win.
Serrano was the only player in the game to have multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored.
Colorado Mines struck first in the top of the third inning, scoring two runs.
Colorado Mesa answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
The Orediggers responded by scoring a single run in the top of the fifth.
The Mavericks answered back with an RBI single by
Bligh Madris.
Dakota Behr earned the win in relief and moved his record to 2-1 on the season. Behr pitched the final 2.1 innings and allowed just two hits while striking out five.
Colorado Mesa broke the old attendance record of 4,468 set by RMAC rival CSU-Pueblo last season.
Over 14,000 tickets were distributed to elementary schools across Mesa, Delta, and Montrose counties in an effort to break the record.
Fans were greeted by Colorado Mesa mascot Rowdy, Grand Junction Rockies mascot Corky the Coyote and JUCO World Series mascot Mr. JUCO. All fans received commemorative K cards and maroon and gold glow-in-the-dark necklaces.
The two teams will conclude the regular season with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1pm. It will also be senior day for the Mavericks as they will honor their seniors prior to tomorrow's opener.
