DENVER – The Colorado Mesa University softball team kept its RMAC regular season title hopes alive by sweeping a doubleheader at Colorado Christian Monday (April 20).
The Mavericks rallied in game one to win 8-7, and won game two 14-3.
CCU scored four runs in the second inning on just one hit and two CMU errors.
The Cougar's lead would grow to 7-2 after five innings.
Sarah Phillis, who hit 2-for-3 with three RBIs, blasted a three run homerun in the sixth inning to pull the Mavs within two, 7-5.
Makayla Kovac led off the seventh inning with a homerun to right center.
Rachel Boothe added a two-run shot over the wall in left field to score what would hold up as the winning run.
Brooke Hodgson earned the win giving up five runs, three earned, on five hits in 3.2 innings.
The Mavericks struck early and often in game two.
CMU scored three runs in the first and added two more in the second thanks to a two-run homerun by
Makayla Kovac.
The Mavs scored three in the fourth and then exploded for six in the fifth.
Brooke Hodgson blasted a grand slam to left field, and
Zoe Pakes followed up with a homerun at the next at-bat.
Brooke Hodgson had three hits in four at-bats with six RBIs. She collected her second win of the day giving up three runs on 11 hits.
CMU (32-17, 28-7) will face MSU Denver and Chadron State April 25-26 in Chadron, Neb.Â
