PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado Mesa put up 18 runs in both halves of today's doubleheader sweep of the Colorado Christian Cougars on Sunday afternoon at Runyan Field. The Mavericks took down the Cougars by scores of 18-7 and 18-3 to move their record to 37-5 on the year and 29-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
In game one, the Mavericks scored five runs in the first, sixth and seventh innings in the 18-7 win. They erupted for 25 hits with seven going for extra bases.
The first six batters of the game reached base for the Mavericks but could only muster two hits in the inning. They benefitted from five walks and a hit batter.
In the five run sixth,
Alex Fife had a three-run double followed by
Zach McLeod's first home run of the season.
McLeod finished the game 3-for-5 with two-runs driven in and two runs scored.
Mitch Robinson was perfect at the plate, going 5-for-5 with two runs scored, two runs driven in, a double and a home run.
Joey Samuels also had four hits in the game.
Kevin Mitchell hit a pair of home runs in the game. He hit a two-run homer in the third and a solo shot in the seventh.
Taylor Prokopis earned the win in relief. Prokopis threw an inning and a third and allowed one hit and walked one to earn his first collegiate victory.
In the series finale, Colorado Mesa scored 18 runs on 20 hits in an 18-3 win over Colorado Christian.
Six Mavericks finished the game with multiple hits.
Bligh Madris went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and four runs driven in. Madris had a two-run double in the six run sixth inning.
Kevin Mitchell hit his third home run of the day in the second inning.
Five pitchers combined to pitch the Mavericks to the win in the finale.
Trent Allianic started on the mound and pitched for the first time since March 9 after an injury forced him to the bench. Allianic threw two innings and allowed one run on two hits, and struck out one.
Matt Allen picked up his fifth win of the season. Allen came in relief of Allianic and allowed no runs on four hits and struck out one.
The Mavericks will conclude their three week road trip next weekend with a four-game series with the MSU Denver Roadrunners at the Regency Athletic Complex.
