PUEBLO, Colo. – Second ranked Colorado Mesa swept a doubleheader from the Colorado Christian Cougars at Runyan Field. The Mavericks improve to 35-5 on the season and 27-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
In the series opener, Colorado Mesa pounded out 23 hits with seven going for extra bases in a 15-2 win over the Colorado Christian Cougars.
The Mavericks tallied seven runs in the first three innings to take a 7-0 lead and added a single run in the sixth, four in the eighth before the Cougars scored two runs in the eighth.
Jake Druce finished the game 4-for-6 with two RBIs in the opener while teammate
Zach McLeod went 4-for-6 as well. McLeod scored three runs and added a double and a triple.
Kyle Serrano and
Alex Fife each had home runs in the game.
Tyler Ehlers earned his sixth win of the season after pitching eight innings. Ehlers allowed just two unearned runs on seven hits, walked none and struck out three.
Ehlers didn't allow a runner to reach third base until the eighth inning.
In game two, the Mavericks trailed 1-0 heading to the top of the fifth inning but
Austin Wallingford's two-run double in the inning gave the Mavericks the lead for good in a 6-1 win.
Wallingford finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs driven in.
Bligh Madris had a home run in the seventh inning.
Ryan Reno picked up his nation leading tenth win of the season. Reno went 4.2 innings and allowed one run on seven hits, walked two and struck out seven.
The Mavericks and Cougars will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 11am.
