GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University softball team extended its winning streak to nine straight games after completing the series sweep of Fort Lewis Sunday (April 12).
The Mavericks won game one 8-5 and the second game 10-2.
Makayla Kovac put the Mavericks on the board first with a solo homerun that went over the scoreboard in center field.
The Mavericks would add two more runs in the second and one in the third to lead 4-1 after four innings.
Jeovanna Rios hit a grandslam to right field to give Fort Lewis its only lead of the day 5-4.
CMU answered with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning.
Kovac would blast her second home run of the game in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Mesa scored 10 runs on 16 hits and left five runners on in the second game.
The Mavericks used smart base running and an error by the Skyhawks to score three runs in the second on two hits.
Both teams scored a pair in the third and the Mavs tacked on three in the fourth. CMU ended the game early with two runs in the sixth.
Jo Bolyard led the Mavericks batting .857 (6-7) with four RBIs and four runs scored in the four-game series.
Makayla Kovac also had a strong series batting .583 (7-12) with 18 total bases, three homeruns, seven RBI and seven runs scored.
The Mavericks remain in first place in the RMAC with a 25-6 mark in league play and are 29-16 overall.
CMU will play at Colorado Christian April 18-19.Â
