Serrano Powers Mavericks to Doubleheader Sweep

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 3 Colorado Mesa University baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of the MSU Denver Roadrunners on Sunday afternoon at Suplizio Field. The Mavericks improved their record to 15-2 overall and 7-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

In game one, Kyle Serrano blasted a two-run home run to left center field in the bottom of the fourth to send the Mavericks to a 2-0 win in the day's opener.

The homer was Serrano's team leading third of the season which ties him for the RMAC lead.

The Mavericks finished the game with only four hits. Right fielder Alex Fife had two of them and scored on Serrano's home run.

Ryan Reno pitched the complete-game shutout allowing four hits, while walking one and striking out three. Reno improved to 5-0 on the season, tops in the RMAC.

Mike Thill went the distance in a losing effort for the Roadrunners. He pitched six innings and allowed two runs on four hits, walked none and struck out two.

In the night cap, freshman hurler Nick Cardinale struck out 14 batters in six innings of work in a 6-2 win for Colorado Mesa.

Cardinale finished the game one strikeout shy of the single-game record of 15 shared by Nolan Snell (2012), Chris Carma (2008), and Bryan King (2002). He finished the game allowing just two runs on five hits and walked one, throwing 103 pitches.

Andy Scott gave the Mavericks a lead that wouldn't relinquish in the bottom of the second inning when he delivered a two-run single to center field, giving the Mavericks a 3-2 lead.

Kyle Serrano finished the game with two more hits.

Colorado Mesa is now on a 10-game winning streak heading into next weekend's series finale with MSU Denver. First pitch is scheduled for 1pm at Suplizio Field.
