GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Three Colorado Mesa pitchers combined to strike out 16 MSU Denver Roadrunners in a 9-3 win on Saturday evening at Suplizio Field.
Matt Delay started on the mound and went 3.1 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits, walked none and struck out five.
Joey Capistran and
Matt Allen combined to throw the final 5.2 innings of the game and didn't allow a hit, combining to strike out 11. Allen struck out seven of the nine batters he faced including five looking.
Capistran picked up the win, moving his record to 3-0 while Allen earned his first save of the season.
Colorado Mesa and MSU Denver were tied after three and half innings.
In the bottom of the fourth,
Joey Samuels laced a double down the third base line scoring
James Young III to break the 3-3 tie. The Mavericks never trailed after that.
Nine of the ten Maverick hitters that played had one hit in the game.
Kyle Serrano hit his second round tripper of the season in the first inning, a no doubter to left field.
The Mavericks and Roadrunners will play a doubleheader beginning at 1pm at Suplizio Field tomorrow.
