Mavericks Continue Winning Streak

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – No. 1 Colorado Mesa swept a doubleheader from the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys on Saturday afternoon to extend their winning streak to 18 games. The Mavericks are now 23-2 on the season and a perfect 15-0 in the RMAC.

In the day's opener, Ryan Reno chucked a complete game shutout in a 4-0 win over the Cowboys. He scattered three hits and struck out eight to earn his NCAA Div. II leading seventh win of the season. He struck out four of the final six batters he faced.

Ben Chamberlin finished the game with two hits including his first double of the season. He drove in a pair of runs with one of those coming on the double.

Alex Fife and Davis Cantwell each hit doubles as well.

Kyle Serrano snapped his 15-game hitting streak after going 0-for-2 in the game.

In the nightcap, Kevan Elcock belted a three-run walk-off home run to left center field to lift the Mavericks to an 8-5 win over the Cowboys. Elcock's homer capped a four-run seventh inning for the Mavericks that began with an infield single by Kyle Serrano.

Colorado Mesa was trailing 5-2 after four and a half innings but scored two in the bottom of the fifth that led to Elcock's heroics.

Every Maverick starter had at least one-hit in the game.

Jake Druce had a pair of hits in the game and drove in three. Druce had a two-run double in the fifth inning to start the comeback.

Joey Capistran picked up the win in relief. He is now 5-0 on the season with all five wins coming in relief.

The two teams will close out the series tomorrow afternoon at 12pm at Suplizio Field.
