Softball Sweeps Highlands

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University softball team swept New Mexico Highlands 6-5 and 9-2 Sunday (March 15).

The Mavericks wasted no time getting runs in game one scoring three in the opening inning.

The Cowgirls scored one run in the second before Katelyn Bates hit a three-run homerun as part of a four run fourth inning for Highlands.

Mesa tied the game at five a side with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

The game would stretch into extra innings before CMU scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch.

Zoe Pakes, Tawnee Woosley and Rachel Boothe each had two hits for the Mavs.

Brooke Hodgson earned the complete game win for Colorado Mesa, her 10th of the season, allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits.

Joslynn Lopez controlled play from the circle in game two for Mavericks with two thirds of her pitches going for strikes. She would strike out five and give up five hits in the complete game win.

Highlands hit solo homeruns in the first and third innings to take an early 2-0 lead.

The Mavericks scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third, and added two more in the fourth in part by a solo homerun by Rachel Boothe.

CMU manufactured two runs in the fifth, and Brooke Hodgson blasted a two-run homer to left field to complete the scoring for CMU. Hodgson batted 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

The Mavericks out-hit the Cowgirls 13-5 in the contest and eight of the nine starters for CMU tallied at least one hit.

Colorado Mesa (15-12, 11-4) will host Adams State March 21-22.
