GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University softball team split with New Mexico Highlands despite being out-hit a combined 21-15 in the two games Saturday (March 14). CMU won the first game 5-2, and NMHU won game two 6-3.
In game one, the Cowgirls put up one run in the top of the third, and the Mavericks countered with a pair in the bottom of the inning.
Brooke Hodgson drove in the two CMU runs with a single to left field.
Hodgson would drive in two more runs for CMU with a double in the fifth inning. The Mavs would plate another run in the inning. Hodgson batted 2-3 with four RBIs.
The Cowgirls would keep things interesting in the top of the seventh trailing 5-1. Destiny Navarro drove in a run with a double to right center. NMHU loaded the bases with one out, but CMU got out of the inning with a pair of fly outs.
In addition to her bat,
Brooke Hodgson earned the win allowing two runs, both earned, on eight hits and five strikeouts.
Highlands opened game two with one run in the first inning.
Mesa regained the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second.
Highlands would extend its lead with five runs across the final three innings.
Tawnee Woosley drove in one run with a single to right center in the bottom of the seventh. The Mavericks comeback would end with the bases loaded.
Zoe Pakes went 2-for-3 with one RBI, and
Tawnee Woosley went 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Rochelle Talamantes took the loss for CMU giving up nine hits and four runs, three earned, in 5.1 innings.
CMU (13-12, 9-4) will conclude the season series with NMHU with a doubleheader Sunday (March 15).Â
