GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa outscored Black Hills State 15-7 in the overtime period and secured a 65-57 win over the Yellowjackets on Friday evening in Brownson Arena.
The Mavericks trailed by four at the 3:17 mark of the second half. That came after CMU failed to score for over 10 minutes in the game from the 12:52 mark, where they were leading by 11, until there was 2:49 left in the game.
Laurin Rivera ended the draught with a three-point bucket to cut the Yellowjacket lead to one, 46-45.
Two of the top defensive teams in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference didn't disappoint tonight. Colorado Mesa limited the Yellowjackets to 38.3 percent (23-of-60) from the field while the Mavericks shot just 36.7 percent (18-of-49) from the floor.
Each team committed 18 turnovers in the game with Colorado Mesa scoring 23 points off them.
Laurel Kasel ended the night with her second career double-double. She had 14 points and 13 rebounds with four coming on the offensive glass. The 13 rebounds were a career-high.
Senior
Leanndra Gilbert also had a double-double, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Erin Reichle finished the night with a game-high 22 points on 6-of-13 shooting. She was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line.
Black Hills State was led by Logan Cowan's 16 points and eight rebounds.
The Mavericks will play the Chadron State Eagles tomorrow evening at 5:30pm.
