Mavs Secure Exhibition Win over Cougars

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Austin Wallingford finished with two hits and the Colorado Mesa Mavericks picked up a 5-2 exhibition win over Cal State San Marcos on Thursday afternoon.

All of the scoring came in the later innings of the contest. Wallingford started the scoring in the top of the seventh after reaching on an error that scored freshman Zach McLeod from third.

McLeod drove in the Mavericks second run with an RBI single through the left side, scoring Kevin Mitchell on the play.

Kevin Mitchell had an RBI single in the eighth followed by a PJ Gonzalez RBI double to make it 4-1. Gonzalez was thrown out on the play, trying to stretch his double into a triple.

Sophomore Kyle Serrano stroked an RBI single in the ninth while San Marcos picked up a run in bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 5-2.

Wallingford finished the afternoon with a double and an RBI.

Newcomers Andy Scott and McLeod each finished the game with a pair of hits.

Senior Trent Allianic got the start and pitched five shutout innings. He allowed four hits and struck out four to earn the win.

The Mavericks will open their season up tomorrow evening against No. 15 UC-San Diego at Triton Ballpark. First pitch is at 7:00pm mountain.
