Mavericks Complete Sweep of CCU

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The third ranked Colorado Mesa baseball team completed the sweep on Saturday of the Colorado Christian Cougars to open up Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Mavericks are now 12-2 on the year and 4-0 in the RMAC.
 
In the opener, Kevin Mitchell and Mitch Robinson hit back to back home runs in the bottom of the seventh to seal the Mavericks 9-5 victor over the Cougars.
 
The Mavericks got on the board in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run single by Mitchell that gave CMU a 2-0 lead that they would never relinquish.
 
Mitchell finished the game 3-for-4 with four runs driven in.
 
Robinson went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs driven in.
 
Nick Cardinale got the start on the bump and pitched into the eighth inning. He allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits, walked five and struck out five to earn his first collegiate victory.
 
Joey Capistran and Tyler Ehlers each pitched an inning to close out the game.
 
In the series finale, Trent Allianic allowed one run in the first inning and then settled in to pitch the Mavericks to a 9-2 win.
 
Allianic went six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, walked one and struck out three in his first start of the season.
 
Offensively, the Mavericks put up three runs in each of the third and sixth innings to break the game open.
 
Robinson finished his day off with three more hits to give him six on the day. He drove in three and scored two runs as well.
 
Kyle Serrano went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored three runs.
 
The Mavericks will head out on the road next weekend as they are set to play MSU Denver in a four-game series at the new Regency Athletic Complex in Denver. The series is set to start on Friday.
