GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – No. 3 Colorado Mesa scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to claim a 6-4 win over No. 25 Cal Baptist on Saturday afternoon at Suplizio Field. With the win, the Mavericks claimed the series win over the Lancers and improved to 8-2 on the season.
Kevan Elcock's RBI single down the left field line and
Alex Fife's RBI single to right field scored the pair of runs in the eighth.
The Mavericks held a 4-2 lead before Cal Baptist scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to knot the game at 4-4.
The Lancers had a chance to take a 5-4 lead in the seventh but were thrown out at home on a ground ball to Elcock at third.
Kyle Serrano finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs driven in. Serrano also hit his first double of the season in the bottom of the third inning.
Elcock and Fife each had two hits as well.
Dakota Behr got his second start of his career and went six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits, walked one and struck out four. Behr got a no decision in the game after leaving with the lead in the seventh. He also lowered his ERA to 2.08 on the season.
Reliever
Joey Capistran picked up his second win in as many days, pitching the final inning and a third.
Colorado Mesa will open up Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play next weekend at Suplizio Field against the Colorado Christian Cougars.
