Mavs Sweep Doubleheader in Dramatic Fashion

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – No. 3 Colorado Mesa won a game handily and needed to come through in the final at-bat in game two to sweep a doubleheader from No. 25 Cal Baptist on Friday afternoon at Suplizio Field.

In game one, Ryan Reno pitched eight strong innings in a 10-3 win for Colorado Mesa.

Reno allowed three runs on 13 hits, walked none and struck out eight to move his record to 3-0 on the season. He struck out the final two batters he faced in the game.

The Mavericks scored in every inning except the second and seventh innings.

Austin Wallingford finished the game 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two runs driven in. He had RBI singles in both the first and sixth innings.

Bligh Madris hit his first collegiate homerun in the third inning, a two-run shot to right center. Madris finished the game with two hits and two runs scored.

Trevor Elcock also had two hits in the game including his first homerun of the season, a booming shot to left field just to the right of the mini-monster.

In the nightcap, the Mavericks led 4-1 heading to the top of the seventh but allowed seven runs in the top half of the inning and trailed 8-4 after eight and a half.

Trailing by four in the ninth, Colorado Mesa's Alex Fife doubled, Zach McLeod singled, and Bligh Madris walked to load the bases with nobody out.

Wallingford hit a chopper to short that the shortstop threw low, making everyone safe and a run in to cut the lead to three.

Trevor Elcock stepped to the plate and drove an 0-1 pitch, deep to left field scoring two and cut the Lancer lead to just one with runners on second and third with no one out.

Kyle Serrano was the next man up and delivered the final blow. Serrano slashed a two-run single up the middle to end the game in walk-off fashion.

Joey Capistran earned the win in relief after going 2.1 innings and allowing just two hits.

The two teams will conclude their four-game series tomorrow with a single nine-inning game at 12:00pm at Suplizio Field.
